Botanical aspects: fam. Rutaceae(description) A member of the orange family, mandarin trees are smaller, with smaller leaves and fruits. It is native to the Far East, particularly southern China. The peel color varies from yellow to deep orange-red when ripe. The peel contains oil secreted in glands located in the zest of the fruit. The tree prefers a hot, humid climate(tropical), and rich soil, although trees in a more temperate climate grow more slowly and produce a greater quantity of oil. Semi-ripe fruit has the most significant oil yield. Mandarin Essential Oil is commonly used in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, and men's colognes. It also has many applications in the flavoring industry. Native to southern China, its name comes from a traditional gift to Chinese mandarins. It was brought to Europe in 1805 and arrived in North America forty years later.
