Botanical aspects:

Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae)

Basil is an annual herb, which grows to about 0.5 m in height. It is native to tropical Asia and Africa, but it is calculated as a popular annual herb worldwide.

The two most commonly available basil oils are the true Sweet basil oil also known as French European or Sweet Basil oil. This oil has a higher percentage of linalool. The second is Exotic or Reunion Basil, which is distilled in Comoro Islands, Madagascar, Thailand, and occasionally in Seychelles Islands. This oil has a high percentage of methyl chavicol.

Color/Consistency/Aroma of oil: This is almost colorless to a pale amber color with a thin consistency. Basil has a sweet, spicy, fresh scent with a faint balsamic woody back note and a lasting sweetness that makes for a strong top note.

Safety considerations: Dilute before use. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. For people with allergic tendency systematically perform an allergy test before use. Never apply essential oils directly on mucous membranes, nose, eyes, and auditory canal. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

For external use, only! Do not use essential oils in intravenous or intramuscular injections. The use of essential oils is not recommended with children, pregnant or lactating women, elderly persons, or persons which are suffering from chronic diseases

Never heat up an essential oil for diffusion.

According to Tisserand & Young, there is a low risk of skin sensitization with Basil Essential Oil. A dermal maximum level of 1.5% is recommended based on 33.7% eugenol. Generally regarded as a safe & gentle oil. Avoid using it during pregnancy. Not for use by people with epilepsy

Basil plant was considered by ancient Greeks “king of plants” and they used it to anoint kings. Likewise, Hindus placed sprigs of basil on the chests of the deceased loved ones to protect them from evil and provide safe passage into the next life.
