Botany(description) Also known as Cornmint, there are several species and Mentha arvensis is a perennial herb that can grow to 3 feet in height. It has hairy leaves with serrated edges and spiked purple flowers and spreads through its underground runners. It is one of the oldest documented medicinal herbs. Japanese peppermint is known for its high menthol content. Peppermint's name has its roots in Greek mythology. Hades, the God of the dead, pursued the beautiful nymph, Minthe. Hades' wife, Persephone, became jealous and turned Minthe into a small and insignificant plant to be trampled. Pluto could not undo the transformation but ensured that Minthe would always be loved for her fragrant aroma. Peppermint is used as a flavoring agent in the food industry and in soaps, candles, and toiletries.

Safety considerations: Because of the very high menthol content, this oil may crystalize. If so, we would recommend placing the bottle in a boiling water bath and changing the water frequently until it is back to its liquid state, then gently agitating before use. Dilute before use. It May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended before use. For people with allergic tendencies, systematically perform an allergy test before use. Never apply essential oils directly on mucous membranes, nose, eyes, and auditory canal. Contact with eyes should be avoided. For external use, only! Do not use essential oils in intravenous or intramuscular injections. The use of essential oils is not recommended with children, pregnant or lactating women, elderly persons, or persons which are suffering from chronic diseases Never heat an essential oil for diffusion.
